About Pulse Renewal - Our Story

April 29, 2024

A MOMENT THAT
CHANGED EVERYTHING.

On April 29, 2024, Charlotte, North Carolina, faced an unimaginable tragedy. What began as a routine operation ended in devastating loss, with four law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

First responders across the region stood together, grieving not simply the loss of colleagues, but members of their first responder family. Officers, firefighters, paramedics, and 911 communications professionals continued to show up and serve while an entire community carried the weight of what had happened.

Then, just days later, Officer Brent Simpson died by suicide while on duty, deepening the grief of an already mourning first responder community.

These losses did not affect one department or one profession. Their impact rippled across agencies, firehouses, hospitals, dispatch centers, families, and communities.

THE IMPACT DIDN'T END
WHEN THE MEMORIALS DID. IT CONTINUES TODAY.

These events became a catalyst for looking differently at how first responders are supported — not only during crisis, but throughout a career of service.

What Came Next

WE CHOSE TO LISTEN.

The events of 2024 created urgency. But before building a solution, we needed to understand what first responders actually wanted and needed.

Late Fall 2024

RESEARCH

We began listening directly to first responders, exploring barriers, trust, engagement, and what support could look like if it were built around their lives.

Early 2025

A VOICE

The research revealed consistent themes around trust, accessibility, flexibility, relationships, community, and multiple ways to engage.

Spring 2025

PULSE RENEWAL

What we heard became the foundation for the launch of Pulse Renewal Project and a broader vision for first responder care.

The Research

FIRST RESPONDERS
TOLD US WHAT THEY NEEDED.

We asked about barriers, trust, engagement, and what care could look like if it were designed around the realities of first responder life.

ACCESSIBLE Easy to reach
AFFORDABLE Cost isn't the barrier
FLEXIBLE Built around real life
PRIVATE Confidential & trusted
CONNECTED Relationships matter

Three Core Areas

First responders identified three areas that could positively impact job performance and overall well-being.

PHYSICAL HEALTH

Structured but flexible fitness, strength, endurance, health, and recovery support.

MENTAL WELLNESS

Counseling, stress-management strategies, peer support, and trusted resources.

SPIRITUAL SUPPORT

Opportunities for personal growth, mentorship, connection, and faith-centered resilience.

Care must be flexible, trusted, and built around the realities of first responder life.

What We Heard

“Connection builds trust.
Trust opens the door to care.”

What We Built

FROM A FACILITY
TO AN ECOSYSTEM.

The original vision for a First Responder Wellness Center remains an important part of Pulse Renewal. But what first responders told us made something clear: the need was bigger than a building.

The Physical Anchor

THE NEED WAS BIGGER THAN A BUILDING.

Pulse Renewal evolved into a connected ecosystem designed to create multiple pathways into wellness, recovery, connection, and care.

Who We Are

FOR FIRST RESPONDERS.
SHAPED BY FIRST RESPONDERS.

Built for the job. Built for the person.

Pulse Renewal brings together first responder experience, research, professional expertise, community relationships, and strategic partnerships around one goal: changing how we care for those who serve.

We believe first responder wellness is bigger than any single program, provider, building, or intervention. It requires a connected ecosystem that recognizes the whole person behind the uniform.

REVITALIZING THE HEART OF THOSE WHO SERVE.
